About this file
Ichimatsu (市松) is the Japanese checkerboard, named after an eighteenth-century kabuki actor who wore it on stage; here it is a true checkerboard of 8 by 8 squares to the tile. Yagasuri (矢絣) is arrow fletching: columns of feathers, each a pair of vanes slanting back from a fine centre shaft, alternating with the ground down every column. Each column is dropped by half a feather and its colours swapped, so the feathers interlock across the cloth. It is the pattern of the Meiji and Taisho schoolgirl's kimono, and because a loosed arrow never comes back, it was a favourite for a bride. Its tile holds 8 columns of 8 feathers.
Both tiles repeat with no seam at any size.
Seven colourways. Indigo (藍) is a quiet tone-on-tone of two indigos, deep on mid, with soft blue shafts. Then Vermilion (朱, vermilion on washi white), Young Bamboo (若竹, deep green on pale bamboo), Yamabuki Gold (山吹, umber on golden yellow), Sakura (桜, rose on blossom pink), Sumi (墨, charcoal on washi white) and Luminous Blue, a modern colourway in a bright blue on cloud white.
Each repeat in each colourway comes as a 2048 px and a 4096 px square PNG tile (sRGB, no transparency), 28 tiles in all. The commercial licence adds an editable SVG tile for each, 14 in all, with the colours set in one style block so you can recolour them in any vector editor.
Also included: origami paper as vector PDFs for A4 and US Letter, fourteen pages each, one per repeat and colourway. Every page holds one 150 mm (5.9 in) square and two 75 mm (2.95 in) squares, printed past the trim line with crop marks to cut on. The squares are full colour edge to edge, so they use plenty of ink; print at 100 % on thin paper.
At 4096 px a tile prints about 35 cm (13.7 in) across at 300 ppi. Use it as digital paper for scrapbooking and cards, for fabric and gift-wrap designs, stationery and packaging, or as a pattern fill and backdrop.
